She added that, it is ideal for all to learn to restrain oneself from indulging in any acts of violence whenever there is a disagreement. She urged inmates to make judicious use of their time in prison by learning skills or vocations that would be useful in earning a living and be self-employed instead of depending on others after their prison terms. While reacting to their plea for a State pardon, Akande promised to look into their request and discuss with appropriate authorities for assistance.

Rape is about power (2)

Rape
Rape
One of the biggest myths about rape and sexual violence is that it happens as a result of uncontrollable sexual desire. Being uncontrollable, the perpetrator cannot be held responsible for his actions. Therefore the survivor must have done something to be raped. Therefore responsibility and blame are then shifted from the perpetrator to the survivor.
Rape happens in every society but it flourishes in an environment where there is violence, where women’s voices are not heard and where perpetrators walk away free because the law is not effective and law enforcement officers are unable to differentiate between their professional obligations and their personal biases.  This is even more difficult in a country like Nigeria where police officers are not equipped to tackle the menace of rape and sexual assault.Rape is not about sexual desire as all humans have such desires but not all commit rape or sexual assault. It is not a crime of passion, where the perpetrator loses control. Many rapists are in a relationship where their sexual urges are satisfied. Sexual assault or rape is a choice that they make. Rapists often plan their crimes, and in the case of children, groom them to gain their confidence and trust while waiting for an opportunity to strike. It is premeditated and over 70% cases of rape are planned in advance. When this happens, the rapist takes away any control the survivor has in that situation.

But the gain is actually in the pain especially where there is an assurance that what we are doing is right. It is only a temporary pain. This is the stage we are in the country now and it calls for deep patience and understanding of all citizens,” Yuguda said.

Who pirated October 1?

October-1
But that is what happens when an otherwise good venture is hijacked by a people dedicated to feeding fat on ignorance and vulnerability. So, when Prince Aderopo eagerly goes for the whiteman’s education, the freedom knowledge gives is tainted by the sexual exploitation a Reverend Father subjects him to. If he must become human again, he must be cleansed. So, just as his forefathers would have done, a girl must die for each of the number of years he was abused; in a land where all young girls must remain virgin till wedding night, they must die at the point of deflowering.
That is how the multiplier effect of exploitation ruins generation after generation. Ask the Almajiris, victims of a feudal system that keeps many poor so the few rich can feed and manipulate them. Don’t ask them, because they do not even know. But the Ogoni people know, the many youths whose money-making time coincides with electioneering know and like it or not, Boko Haram insurgents now know. Just listen very well to their speeches. The real tragedy is not that many virginal Nigerians die daily, it is the fact that survivors wake up each morning to the possibility of dying, while the few Inspector Waziris and Sergeant Afonjas run aground.

Where is our 2016 Budget?

It’s 7:49am today, the 4th of January, 2016, and I woke up from sleep with the buzzing sound of my phone.
I was still half asleep when I reluctantly picked the call with a weak “hello”.
The caller on the other end shouted, “Deji, you are still sleeping? Nigeria is going down and you are sleeping. Are you aware that Buhari withdrew the budget he presented to National Assembly from Saraki, and Saraki gave it to him out of fear?
“Deji, as I speak to you, the National Assembly does not have the budget any more. Saraki and Dogara are confused. They could not stand up for our democracy. They have failed our nation. Deji, you people need to speak up before this man destroys our nation.”
How can a President present a country’s budget and take it back? I remember when a dear sister was so happy and optimistic that the 2016 budget was already out before the year started and said “even with ‘world class economist’ the budget usually come long after the year had started.”
