There
won’t have been a more dignifying manner to announce this year’s
nominees for the Best of Nollywood Awards, BON than the manner it
happened as the first official event held at the International
Conference Centre, Ondo State where Olusegun Mimiko, the governor was
present to commission the building, and
participated in the
announcement.
The governor who congratulated BON on its consistency in holding the
prestigious award said he was happy to host the BON award this year and
is in tandem with Ondo state’s dream to make the state the number one
event destination in Nigeria.
While making reference to the fact that the unveiling is the first
official function at the event centre, revealed that he wished he had
more time to see Nollywood films and be more familiar with the real
stars in Nollywood, as Nollywood has proven itself to be a major export
commodity for our country.
According to the governor, “Today, Nollywood contributes about
$7.2billion to Nigerian GDP and apart from Agriculture, perhaps
Nollywood is the second biggest employer of labour for Nigeria. This is a
very big industry and we are happy to make our little contribution to
the progress in this industry.”
“We know about the challenges of piracy and we are told that not up to
20 percent of the total quantum of money in that industry goes to the
genuine practitioners in the industry. And this is a major challenge and
moving forward, Nigeria has to find a solution to that because piracy
eats into your creative energy,” he added.
He however advised the players in the industry to be deliberate in terms
the stories they tell, emphasizing on the importance of having a
deliberate narrative to tell the Nigerian story and rebrand the nation
for the better.
“Using your creativity, you can help brand this nation and start a new
narrative for this country. We must stop de-marketing our nation, let us
create a new Nigeria narrative and prophesy positive in the lives of
this great nation and what Nollywood has been able to do in the last
couple of year bears eloquent testimonies to the fact that our
possibilities as a nation are infinite,” Mimiko explained.
Seun Oloketuyi, chief executive officer, Best of Nollywood Awards,
assured that this year’s BON award would be the best that we have done
so far.
According to him, “The governor of Ondo state has built the biggest
entertainment event centre in Nigeria and we are proud to have the first
event to be held here and appreciated the governor for efforts he has
put in the state.”
